3 tips for writing your Gold Quill Awards submission

It’s time to start turning our attention to the Gold Quill Awards. We’re hoping that you will consider submitting some work that you’ve done this year. There are four Divisions, each with a number of categories under which you can submit your work.
While submissions are due on 9 January 2020, it’s a good thing to start early and plan how you will write your submission.
Here are our tips from an experienced awards judge on the top three areas that sometimes ‘fall down’ when it comes time to the quality of a submission:
- Business Need and Communication Opportunity
- This section can be viewed as the ‘problem statement’. The people judging the awards may be located in other states/territories, or even countries, so it is important to contextualise the organisation, the problem and the rationale for the communication solution being applied to the problem. Don’t assume the judge will know all about your organisation and will then just know why you applied the solution that you did.
- Getting this first section right, will provide context for the remainder of the submission, i.e. why you selected the stakeholders that you did, and why you set the goals and objectives that you did, and why you chose the approach for a solution, etc.
- Align your evaluation with the objectives that you have stated and re-state the objective, identify the measurement methodology and then the results.
- Look at both output and impact evaluation. For example, the number of news agencies that ran your story is nice to know; however, was there an increase in the number of quality engagements or actions taken by your target audience/s following that news item going out?
- If the campaign was recent and it is too early for you to have the full results of the impact that your communication solution had, then at least indicate what evaluation methodology is planned and how itis aligned to your objectives.
3. Work samples
- The work samples are also evaluated and can include such things as topline research conducted to establish the business need/communication opportunity (can reference this in the work plan), or an events checklist that you may have used (also can reference this in the work plan).
