Federal Budget 2019 wrap-up

9 Apr 2019

Over the past week, our newsfeeds reached ‘peak Budget’ and at times we were tempted (briefly!) to buy our phones in the veggie patch for a break! If you were feeling the same, here’s a summary of what you missed…

The ABC live blogged Treasurer Josh Frydenburg’s first Budget, then Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s Budget reply two days later. There was a summary of Budget ‘winners and losers’ on news.com.au, but it was Julie Bishop’s blue sequined dress that stole some of the limelight.

The Budget getting back to surplus made news headlines and to reinforce the good news the Liberal Party implemented a new “Back In Black” social media theme on its official accounts. However analysis showed that tax cuts were a winner in media coverage. If you’re a public servant, the Budget is all about shared services and productivity.

And what does this all mean ahead of an election? Michelle Grattan shared her insights via video on the impact of the Budget, and Budget reply, on the upcoming federal election.

For a more serious wrap-up, check out the Federal Budget 2019 Review from KPMG and the Federal Budget 2019 Analysis from the Australian Insititute of Company Directors.
