What Should We Talk About Next?

Earlier this month, the IABC team was at the 3rd Annual Public Sector Comms Week as industry partners. The event left us feeling energised, challenged and inspired. The conversations we heard, and the ideas shared, reinforced the need for stronger networks and more spaces to learn from each other.

Now, we want to hear from you.

We have a short survey to capture what matters most to communicators right now.

  • What topics do you want to explore further?
  • What challenges do you want to tackle with peers?

Your input will help us shape future IABC-led events, discussions and professional development opportunities.

Please help us by completing a 2-minute survey to share your suggestions.

Reflections from the 3rd Annual Public Sector Comms Week

Held in Canberra from 14 to 16 May 2025, the Public Sector Comms Week brought together over 70 speakers and hundreds of attendees across three parallel conference streams focused on internal communication, external engagement and social media. The event was a showcase of the innovation, agility and leadership emerging across public sector communication teams.

Having attended day one of the conference, here are a few highlights from Anjali Srivastava, Secretary of the IABC Canberra chapter.

Maintaining Trust in the Digital Age

Timothy McLean, General Manager of Communications at the Bureau of Meteorology, delivered a compelling keynote on maintaining trust in public institutions. His case study highlighted how service quality, operational capability, and clear communication work together to build trust in real time. In a world where trust can shift quickly, this was a strong reminder that credibility comes from both performance and messaging.

Leadership and Hierarchy

Nelly Miles, Director of Public and Governmental Affairs at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, brought a global perspective with a refreshingly honest take on leadership. She made a strong case for moving away from rigid hierarchies and towards leadership models that empower teams and encourage shared ownership of outcomes. Even online, her energy and clarity stood out.

The Power of Data Storytelling

Garrett Tyler-Parker, Director of Analysis and Insights at Austrade, shared practical strategies for using data to drive better communication decisions. His key point – that more data does not automatically lead to better outcomes – was well made. Without the right strategy, data can confuse more than clarify. His session reminded us that storytelling is what gives data its value.

Communications as a Strategic Asset

A standout panel discussion featuring Holly Badior, Felicity Spurrett and Sadie Tilleray explored how communications can and should function as a strategic driver within government. This was more than a call for a seat at the table. It was a call for confidence, capability and collaboration. Sadie’s follow-up session on building high-performing teams provided useful frameworks for leading the communication functions with purpose and direction.

Reinforcing the Power of Community

Alongside the formal sessions, one of the most valuable aspects of the day was connecting with others. Whether it was exchanging ideas with peers or catching up with old colleagues, the conversations during the breaks and between sessions were a reminder of the strong professional community we’re part of.

We are proud to have been a strategic industry partner for this event, and we’re looking forward to continuing the conversation with your help.
